The stage name comes from two parts. The "FKA" stands for "Formerly Known As," and she had a nickname, twigs, because of the way her joints crack, so those were fused together to make the name she is known by.
Originally, she was a backup dancer, working with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Kylie Minogue, Taio Cruz and Jessie J. She then self-released her music debut, EP 1 in December 2012 before being signed by the label Young Turks. In September 2013 she released her second extended play EP 2, and recognition followed soon after. She's been featured on Billboard's 14 Artists to Watch this year.
Her debut album was released through Young Turks in August of this year, and she was just featured as the musical guest on Jimmy Fallon on November 4.
