Bands to Watch: Twenty One Pilots

Twenty One Pilots is an experimental pop duo from Columbus, Ohio known for their amazing live performances. These guys give 200% at every show, and it shows in the ticket sales of their current tour.

Formed in 2009 with a three person lineup consisting of Tyler Joseph, Nick Thomas, and Chris Salih, they self-released two albums in 2009 and 2011. Also in 2011, Thomas and Salih left the band and the current Twenty One Pilots lineup formed with Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. In 2012, they were signed by Fueled by Ramen, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records. Their latest album, Vessel, was released in 2013.

The band’s name was actually inspired when Tyler studied All My Sons by Arthur Miller. Their music is a mix of piano, synth, drums and vocals. Another cool fact about them is that their lyrics are poetry-based. Tyler writes poetry, and often it’s too long for the song which is why he raps: to fit all of the lyrics in.

Currently, the band is on the Quiet is Violent World Tour as a headliner. Their supporting acts are Misterwives and Vinyl Theater. Back in June, Tyler tweeted that they were working on new music, so we can expect something from them soon I’m sure. Check out their tour dates here and keep up with them on Twitter.
