Album Review: Personal Oscars Playlist

Words by: Emma Dunne

My own Album review of my own little contribution to the 2015 Oscars; (my own compilation of Oscar songs).

So the other day, I bought some songs off of Itunes that were songs that had to do specifically with Oscar nominated movies for the year 2014; even though that it’s 2015, yeah you get the point. I put it into a playlist entitled “Movies 2014”. There are only roughly about six songs in here, but I will surely add some more as I know there are TONS more movies that I could nominate. The first song is “Hero” by Family of the year. It’s the last song we hear on the Boyhood soundtrack, and it’s like the last scene in the movie as well. I do love this song because in my opinion it’s the best song off of that album. The movie starts (relatively well) with the song “Yellow” by Cold Play, which is a good song to start your movie off with! Not my favorite though, probably the best song (in my opinion) that starts the rolling credits for a movie would be the film “The Kids are alright”, which used “Vampire Weekend;s” song “Cousins” from the album “Contra.” It’s perfect because it describes “California” and what most people do there-skate board, or roller skate, or usually any outdoor activity you can think, and make its poetic statement right off the bat. The second song I picked for my playlist/album was “Glory”, by John Legend and Common, from the movie “Selma”; and it won best song at the Oscars. Enough said. They deserved this song to win, and “Selma” should have AT LEAST been in the running for best picture/best director, but I DIGRESS. The third song is “Radioactive” by Kings of Leon, also in the “Boyhood” soundtrack. Note to self: must buy also “Somebody I used to know” by Goyte as that song was on that album as well. Next we have “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley, ironically not in the film “Birdman’s” sound track, but was the song featured on all of “Birdman’s” ads. Weird. Next we have “One (Blake’s got a new face”) by Vampire Weekend, also on the Boyhood soundtrack, very poignant song to capture the moment from boyhood to teenage-hood. Lastly we have “Immortals” by Fall Out Boy, which was on “Big Hero 6”s soundtrack, (the animated film that won). I know I have more to add, so I will surely come back to this blog post at a later date. Ciao! :).
