Album Review: A Place of Our Own by Have Mercy

Words by: Emma Comeaux

Have Mercy was a band I had never heard of or listened to before this.

To Convey - Although the vocals are controlled, the song is well structured. If it wasn’t for the interesting guitar bits.

Two Years – This song proved much better than the last. I really loved the story of the song. It’s definitely intriguing.

Howl - The guitar in this is spectacular, it brings a bit of flavor to the song. Though the songs are a little short for the most part they have a lot packed into them.

The Place You Love – All of these songs though slightly generic in vocals and music have interesting stories. The attempt to spice up the vocals is appreciated but not well executed.

Pete Rose and Babe Ruth – The drumming in this is controlled, but in this case it’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Spacecrafts – This song was one of my favorites on my album. Everything about it was interesting in the most beautiful way. They even managed to make the vocals more interesting.

Plastic Covered furniture – If the song title doesn’t make you fall in love then the song will. This is another one of the best songs on this album.

Pawn Takes Rock – Even though it’s a song of losing love the song is something you can’t help but be in love with. “You were so much better than me, polite, and bright, with your straight teeth.”

Inch by Inch – This is a lovely song with gentle, easy, vocals that collide perfectly with the gorgeous guitar in this song.

Nails and Teeth in Payment – This piece was the purest form of that little something that tugs in your gut. The amazing vocals exclaiming the truthful, painful, but needed lyrics. “If we stay there’s nothing we can create.’

Lean – This album progressively got better and the journey has been a wild but appreciated ride. This song is low and deep and dark. A question of hiding arises, and not everyone agrees with the decision.
