INTERVIEW: Tahir Register

Interview by: Liz Coffey
*Answers directly quoted from email interview.
Can you start by introducing yourself and giving me either a guilty pleasure song or an interesting fact about yourself?
I'm Tahir Register, 25 years old and I consider myself the modern day renaissance man. I do it all, sing, compose, write, photography, direct, produce...you name it, if it's entertainment, I've done it. HA!! Only because I've had to, my whole life I've never wanted to wait for someone to do anything for me, so I learned it, and did it for myself. An interesting fact about me is I do it all, but I really wish I didn't have to...
What made you decide to make music a career? Where did your passion come from?
Michael Jackson made me decide to make music a career, it was Thriller, watching Thriller made me want to do entertainment, made me want to sing, to see if I could sing, and dance, and act, and produce and write. Once I saw how much Mj had his hand in his own work I thought, that's how it should be. My passion comes from God, love, family and inspiration, those equal my determination and it's unmatched.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is soft, but strong, big, but controlled, it's unique in that I am me, and no one can do, or be me, but comfortable for others to listen to. Musically, sonically I love to structure my tracks to sound grandiose, where there is a clear climax, I call my sound cinematic magic.
Who do you point to as your biggest influences?
My biggest influences, Jesus Christ, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Brandy, India Arie, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and everyone who wrote/produced songs for them! HAHAHAHAhahah
What makes you unique in the local scene?
My style and look makes me unique on the local scene, my look is a mysterious one. I rock the deep shadow and eye liner, with the ill hat to go alone with it, but I'm bright and funny and likeable, it's powerful, my presence walks into the room before I get there I always say...and that's special. I am special. It took me years to get to a point of feeling that way, but now that I am, I'm unafraid of my greatness.
How would you describe the local music scene?  What are some of the pros and cons of being based there?
Recently I moved to Atlanta and the scene here is fake it till you fake it till you get caught till you make it...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhahahahahah these folks are all superstars in their heads no humility, humbleness, or reality, but the ones that are talented and blessed are very hard workers hitting the clubs, pubs, bars, and background gigs...they make it hard to find work. The pros, lots of opportunity, the cons, everyone here is here for the same thing.
Are there any locals you collaborate or play shows with often?
No.
Do you book your own shows? What has your experience been like and what advice would you give to someone starting out?
Yes, I book my own shows, my experience is always, no matter what remain professional even in the most "hole-in-the-wall" place because you never know who's watching and you want to always have a great conversation happening about you when you are not in the room...come prepare, extra prepared for anything and always have acapella songs and crowd pleasing cover songs you can perform to keep people interested.
Has new technology such as streaming and social media affected your experience in music? Has it helped or hurt you?
Yes, it has, and it has helped me, without it I would not be visible....social media is my life, it's my money, its how I exist the second it's gone, so am I and i'd have to start over from the ground up like the 90s when I was growing up, which I love, but it's extremely hard!
What was the process of recording like? What were some of the best and worst parts?
The best parts, the creative parts, getting in the zone freestyling over the tracks coming up with lyrics and sounds to fit your idea, the worst part is that I work alone and often get stuck and wish I had one or two more people to collaborate with to get projects done faster.

What is music "all about" for you?
Life, love, healing, it's about the truth, theres no judgement there...

What are some of the major goals you want to accomplish, both personally and  in your music?
I want to write great hit records for major artist, and myself, I want to finally own my own place and start bringing artist in under my company and getting us all work, I want a Grammy or 10 ahhhhhhahahahah and overall happiness.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten, and how do you use that advice?
The best advice was to stop working so hard for other people because sometimes they're just big fish in a little pond and they enjoy that and will never be more than that, to focus on me. And I stopped putting others before me and started focus's on my own music and career and it helped.

What do you want fans to take away from this album?
I want fans, my biscuitheads, to take away the truth, happiness, a sense of who I am as a writer and producer, and to ultimately use the music to influence themselves and others positively as a reference or guide. Oh and SHAKE THEY ASS!!! ahhhahahahahhaha

What can we expect from you coming up (Music + Shows)?
You can expect to want to create hiphop dance routines to my records, you can expect to want to create memes from some of the lines in the lyrics, expect quality vocals and performances, and expect more music!

Where do you see yourself in five years?
30. ahhahahahahahhahahah

Is there anything else you’d like to say ?
Bless you for this interview...keep it up we need more of this!
