Interview by: Xochitl Hansen
Amongst Thieves is a five piece post hardcore band hailing from York, United Kingdom. Success from their debut EP “Revise. Reform”, being part of the Slam Dunk line up, and appearing in Rocksound has all led Amongst Thieves to become part of the great surge of bands coming out of England. Their new EP “March For The Sun” has drawn even more attention the band, first starting with collaboration on single “Stay Close” with vocalist for The Color Morale Garret Rapp and second having their music being uploaded to well know music gurus YouTube channel “BryanStars”. Preparing to take the stage soon with well hard rock band Alesana , I was honored to be able to have them answer a few questions.
Can you name and position in the band?
Hey! I'm Josh and I sing / scream / jump about like an idiot in the band!
How and when did Amongst Thieves come together?
We got together in the summer of 2013. Morgan and I were in a band which had just split and we were looking for a new project. We poached Ricky from another band, Andy found us and wanted to get involved, and we got our mate Nathan in to play bass. When Nath left, I asked Jason if he wanted to join and it's been a solid line-up since then!
How did you all come up with the name "Amongst Thieves”?
We spent a while thinking about names while we were writing and we actually robbed that phrase from a video game series called 'uncharted'
I've noticed many great bands have recently come out of England, how does it feel to be part of the surge?
It feels really great! There's a ton of awesome music out there, especially from our home town of York. We grew up with bands like Asking Alexandria and With One Last breathe on our local music scene so inspiration has never been short.
What does the writing process look like for Amongst Thieves?
Morgan is always writing guitar parts, day in day out. So when we think we've got something with a guitar part, we all sit down and tweak it, build it up and re-structure it and make it a song. When we take the demos into the studio we usually sit with our producer and re-work it and add bits. It's great to take it to the studio and get an outside perspective.
You guys have some pretty powerful and well-crafted lyrics, where does the inspiration come from?
I get inspiration from everywhere really. The first E.P was mainly about stuff I was going through at the time, but March For The Sun is much more compassionate. I am pretty happy right now so I didn't really have anything to get off my chest. I spent a lot of time thinking about what other people have to face and addressing those problems in my lyrics.
Coming up pretty soon you guys are going to be sharing the stage with Alesana, how does that feel?
Pretty surreal! I saw Alesana in my home town nearly eight years ago, one of the first shows I went to. It's really overwhelming knowing we're going to be sharing the stage with them
The way your music flows it makes you seem like you've been doing this awhile, how long have you guys been playing even before the creation of the band?
I've been in bands for nearly ten years which makes me feel pretty old, but I think all of us have been playing music in one form or another since our early teens.
How does it feel to have such a dedicate fan base?
It's really cool! I love getting messages on Twitter from fans and we all spend a lot of time trying to make sure we can talk to everyone. It's amazing to see how many people share our music, tweet about is, draw fan art and it honestly makes our day!
Any plans on playing in America?
America is our goal! We have so many fans over there and we want to come play for everyone more than anything. We're at the stage where we're not making a living wage from the music, so we all work full time jobs to get by. If this level of support continues, it's only a matter of time before we tour across the pond!
What's coming up next for Amongst Thieves?
We've got a ton of stuff in the pipeline waiting to be released. We're just making sure we can get it out to as many people as possible. We've got a few tours lined up and writing has already started for an album!
What does music mean to you?
Tough question! To me music is something that makes you feel something. Whether it be happy, sad or pissed off. It's a release for both the listener and the performer and I think that's why the relationship between artists and fans is so strong.
Make sure you keep an eye out for them!
