Soviet Dolls Interview

Hey readers! This past Tuesday, I sat down with local band Soviet Dolls for a quick get-to-know-you interview! They were really awesome to hang out with for a little while and I even got to hear them rehearse a few songs! They're one of my favorite local bands that I've recently discovered. If you live in the area, go check out one of their shows, you won't be disappointed! If you're not in the area, you can still check out their music on their website, which I'll link at the bottom of this post.

So we'll start with the basics: Who are the members and what are their roles?

Hannah Gouldrick- Vocals
Matt Cavallaro- Guitar, Synth, Production, and a little bit of everything- "He runs the show!"
Steve Quinn- Bass, Synth, Production
Greg Stella- "My favorite ice cream is vanilla."  :)

Who are they and who are their influences?

"I would file it in with Depeche Mode, or maybe even some trip hop groups." (Greg)

"Yeah, it's like a big melting pot. I don't want to sound cliche but it's kind of like a mix of everything." (Matt)

There's a stark contrast between the rougher music and the pure vocals Hannah provides. Matt adds that they have a very similar sound to CHVRCHES- "I swear I didn't rip them off!" he said...They actually didn't know who they were when they formed.

Where did the name come from?

"Me and my brother were sitting in a bar and we were trying to come up with a name. He came up with the name Soviet Flowers and I said 'No, what about Soviet Dolls' and he said that was way better. There's no real deep story behind it, but we definitely play off the name a little bit." (Matt)

What's coming up for them?

They have a show coming up on September 14 at the Bug Jar with Broods. "We've played a few shows at the Bug Jar before with Joywave and KOPPS, but this is our first time playing with Broods." (Hannah)

They have a few tentative shows out by Syracuse and in Buffalo, but they're up in the air.

"We're doing some recording and starting to write, but I don't know what it's going to be yet." (Matt)

Are there any other local bands that you guys find you play shows with a lot or you collaborate with?

"We're really good friends with Admirers and The Branch Davidians (Greg's other band), KOPPS, Joywave, pretty much everyone down at the Bug Jar. We're pretty acquainted with everybody, but we don't play with everybody. There's definitely a little community where we can pick up the phone and set up a show with people." (Matt)

So there you have it! Short and sweet, but to the point. To check out their music, you can head to their website. For tickets to the September 14 show with Broods, hit the band up on Twitter
