Interview by: Liz Coffey
Blindside Drop is a pop/metal band based in Lexington, KY. Their explosive sound combines the styles of pop and alternative music, while taking it to the next level. With kickass vocals, intense guitars and a rhythm section driving their music, their music has something for every listener. I spoke with them via email over the last few weeks, and was fortunate enough to ask them some questions.
Members and their roles:
The lead vocalist is Brittany Means. The guitarists are Mark Wolf and Stefany Moran, who also does the backup vocals. Michael Wolf is the bassist, and Ryan Profitt is the drummer.
When were you founded? How did this come together?
The band began with our guitarists, Mark and Stefany, forming the prototype for band in high school around 2009, just to jam along with some friends into music. It wasn't much beyond a musical outlet and a young cover band. We played a few shows, but the band didn't become what it is now until Brittany, our vocalist, joined. That's when we wrote our first originals, and as the three tightened up as the melodic core, while pumping out more originals, we needed a good rhythm to power the music. We snagged Ryan, our drummer right after his former band broke up, and Michael, Mark's twin, joined in as the bassist.
How would you describe your sound?
We combine chaos of metal and the gloss of alternative and pop stylings into a high-powered songs. Our guitars balance an act of being hard and heavy to being light and accessible. With the rhythm section driving and intensifying our music, we make a wall of sound that surrounds and embraces the listener, and singer completes it with deep and dense vocals that overtake the volume and surge of our music, like she owns it all.
What makes you unique in your local scene?
We have a sound that is right between the hardcore/metal scene and the alternative scenes. It allows us to play at venue and shows for either of them, without being out of place.
Who are your influences?
Each member of the band has a difference influence that is on opposite of the spectrum when it comes to genre. Brittany Means, Lead vocalist, is a huge fan Tool. Mark Wolf, guitarist, enjoys listening to bands like Green Day and My Chemical Romance. Stefany Moran, guitarist, likes Parkway Drive and All That Remains (she’s the metal head). Michael Wolf, bassist, influence is Cage the Elephant. Ryan Profitt, Drummer, influences are Tool as well and more classic rock bands. With that being said, our goal is to try to not sound like what are influences are, rather, create a sound that is a blend of all our influences together.
Where did the name come from?
We got our band name right around when Brittany joined. We had a name prior to her, but when she joined, the band something entirely new, so we knew we needed a new name to reflect this huge change. The name "Blindside Drop" was recommended by one of our friends. He said it's an unexpected punch that slams you down to the ground, and it fits for the type of effect want to have on people.
What is the typical writing process for you?
One of us, usually Mark, makes up a riff and a chord progression for a verse and for the chorus of a song. We all will listen to it. If we all like it, everyone learns the notes, and we play a few times to get it down with the beat that Ryan plays. Brittany will choose lyrics that fits with the feel of the song, and as she works on the melody, the guitarists will begin to add lead parts. Then, we just continue tightening up the song until it is complete.
What’s coming up for you guys (music+shows)?
We are actually very excited about a week-long tour were having around the Midwest.
Are there any other local bands that you guys find you play shows with a lot or you collaborate with?
We have played many shows with many bands from around our area. All of them are amazing but some bands that we have played shows with repeatedly are Noble Giants, Trending Now, Dark Horse, and Nothing Official.
Are any of you involved in other projects at the moment?
We are all dedicated to Blindside Drop, and we're devoting our creative energies to make this band the best.
