Next Year’s End resides in Cumming, Atlanta and the boys currently have an EP out now! It’s titled Modern Misery and consists of 5 great tracks! The fast punk tempos and loud guitars in a song like “All Is Fallen” showcases the heavy punk rock and pop music elements in they put into their songs. It has a heavy Sleeping With Sirens meets Falling In Reverse influence to it. The boys were also apart of the 19th annual Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands at Vans Warped Tour 2015 this year! Next Year’s End also enjoys long walks on the beach and mini golf tournaments! The band is currently in the studio as well as playing shows and opening for Boy Meets World!

Bands to Watch: Daughter

By: Kat Quach

Daughter is an indie folk mixed with alternative rock three piece from England. They are made up of members Elena Tonra who is the band’s front on vocals, bass and guitar, Igor Haefeli on guitar and bass, and Remi Aguilella on drums and percussion. Watching performances of the band from videos on the internet, I recognized this power Elena’s voice had mixed in with the band’s instruments that just captured the audience and drew them in. Their songs from their current album “If You Leave” which was released back in 2013, really present their indie folk vibe with the combinations of catchy melodies and acoustical contemporary sounds. Songs from the album like “Youth” and “Smother” can be very relatable lyrically because of the struggles that we as people go through in life, especially during adulthood. My personal favourite lyric is from “Smother” and it is “I sometimes wish I stayed inside my mother…never to come out” and I could easily emotionally connect to the song about the rough time the band was trying to share. Daughter are currently in the studio creating more music and I can’t wait for their work in the future.

Bands to Watch: The Maine

Article By - Kat Quach

The Maine is an alternative pop rock band that originates from Tempe, Arizona. The band members include John O’Callaghan (vocals, piano), Kennedy Brock (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Pat Kirch (drums and percussion), Jared Monaco (lead guitar) and Garrett Nickelsen (bass). They released their first EP “Stay Up, Get Down” back in late 2007 and their first full length album “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” in late 2008. The Maine’s most recent studio album is called “American Candy” and was released back in March this year. Songs from “American Candy” are a various mix of chill and laid back songs like “My Hair”, as well as upbeat songs that you can jam out and dance too like “English Girls”. American Candy can easily be enjoyed by anybody as it includes a variety of catchy songs that can please everyone. Overall it was a successful album with a massive, positive reaction that definitely made their tour for American Candy in the Spring of 2015 super exciting where the boys toured with Real Friends and Knuckle Puck.

Bands To Watch: Against The Current

Article By- Kat Quach

Against the Current is a three piece pop rock group consisting of Chrissy Costanza (vocals), Dan Gow (guitar, vocals) and Will Ferri (drums). The young band originated from Poughkeepsie, New York. They are currently preparing for their upcoming world tour for their EP “Gravity”. “Gravity” consists of six very catchy love songs with a distinct rock vibe. Songs like “Dreaming Alone” and “Talk” have very light lyrics and an immense guitar background. This is even shown in their previous EP “Infinity”. The originality that ATC bring to their covers also showcase the raw talent of this band. Against the Current started out on Youtube, collaborating with other famous Youtube artists like Alex Goot and Kurt Schneider. They would then cover current pop songs and adding their own flare and sound to them, mixing in multiple genres and giving rock and alternative vibes. Their previous covers of “Not Over You” by Gavin DeGraw and “Catch My Breath” by Kelly Clarkson are a prime example of their assorted urban pop alt rock sound. Just earlier this year, ATC were signed by the American record label of Fueled by Ramen, which is set to really help distributed the band’s music worldwide and raise awareness of the rise of this hot, young pop rock trio.

Bands to Watch: 4th 'N Goal

Words by: Kat Quach

“What’s more pop punk than a band from the birthplace of pizza?!”

4th ’N Goal are a pop punk group, originating from Milano in Italy. The six piece are really chill dudes that love music and love to eat! 4NG consists of the members Mocho and Sam on vocals, Tommy and Dimi on guitar, Thomas (Tom) on drums and Mike on bass. They gained popularity for their Bring Me The Horizon cover and parodied video of the hit “Drown”. The two EPs they released back in 2011 and 2013 (GASON and DUDES LEGACY) allowed them the wicked opportunity to share the stage with some big names like The Story So Far, New Found Glory, The Disasters and many more! The boys are currently working on new music, hoping to release another EP soon while also playing shows. However, their most recent EP is “Turn On The Light” that was just released this year, features 6 songs, as well as the BMTH cover. My favourite tracks off Turn On The Light are “Red Line Extreme” which features Matty Arsenault of A Loss For Words and “Pickles”. I find that they just give you a great idea of their easy core sound with the uplifting lyrics and catchy, punk inspired tune.

Bands to Watch: Cahoots

Article By: Kat Quach

Cahoots is pop trio made up of Currice, Matt DeFreitas, and Tom Joseph Law. The band resides in London, England and were only formed at the beginning of this year. The boys are all Youtubers and have their own separate singing channels but met last year at a Youtube workshop, forming Cahoots! The band started off as an experiment to see if they would work out together after realizing how passionate they all were about music. They upload covers and miscellaneous videos twice a week on their band Youtube channel as well as occasionally doing their own covers on their separate channels. Combined, the boys have over 300k subscribers and as a band, 23k subscribers. Their first original song is called “Shoes”. The boys sing about how they try their best everyday to have a good day despite facing situations like poor weather but all they really need are their shoes because with them, it helps keep them going through everything. My personal favourite cover that they’ve done is of “The One” by Kodaline. I love Kodaline and I think the boys did a great job in the cover. It’s all stripped down and live with the boys sitting by a window and Tom on guitar. Watching this cover, you can really see how passionate and musically driven they are when they’re singing and I hope these guys get far! They recently entered and won the #TakeTheStage contest from Vodafone and covered “Sugar” by Maroon 5 at the Capital Summertime Ball in Wembley Stadium. Cahoots are currently working on releasing original music each month for their fans on Youtube.

Bands to Watch: Panama Wedding

Words By: Kat Quach

Panama Wedding is a indie pop and electronic rock four piece group originating from New York City, USA. The band consists of singer/songwriter Peter Kirk, guitarist Jared McCarthy, bassist Brett Spigelman and drummer Kenny Bernard.

Panama Wedding had their big break when Peter Kirk released their first single “All of the People” on Bandcamp. At age 11, Kirk had already been playing piano and learning how to record and mix sounds in his bedroom. He uploaded the song on the subway before going out for dinner and came home to missed calls from his manager with A&R people calling.

Peter spent a couple years as an electronic pop soloist before expanding. Later on in 2013, the band altogether reproduced and released a group version of the same song, “All of the People” which gained online popularity, broadening their profile. This got them to be signed by Glassnote Records.

They released their debut EP Parallel Play back in 2014 which charted on the Billboard Top Heatseekers! I recommend listening to “All of the People” and “Feels like Summer”. There are only four songs on this EP but all great for the summer because all the tracks are catchy and upbeat. It consists of songs that you can blast in your car or room as your summer anthem!

Panama Wedding are currently kicking off Game On with The Golden Pony this month and playing festivals like Firefly Music! Their links are below.

Bands to Watch: Picturesque

Words by: Summer Hartley

Picturesque is a five piece rock band thriving from Lexington, KY, and they're gonna be the next big thing. The band consists of Zach Williamson and Dylan Forrester on guitar, Kyle Hollis on vocals, Robert Mote on bass, and Cole Clark on the drums. Coming out of a town full of talent, these five shot out of the scene like a cannon after doing live shows and releasing their free EP. The band only began in 2014, dropping their hometown debut show in early 2015 (right in Lexington, KY), and already the band has landed attention from a worldwide crowd. Picturesque has 4,756 likes on their Facebook page (as of 5/24/15), but they grow in their fanbase by the day, bringing in more and more people with the kick ass music and genuine connection they have with the people who love their music.

Picturesque has a sound not found in many, but definitely loved by many. Being compared to the likes of Circa Survive, Sleeping With Sirens, and Of Machines, Picturesque has something special to them, whether it be their music that makes you want to sing along and kick stuff over or the fact that they are just plain talented and genuine in what they do. Kyle is known for having better vocals than 99% of the population, while Zach and Dylan bring fresh guitar mixes that sound professional and precise behind everything. Then you have the low end with Robert and Cole, who keep the song pumping without you even realizing it. Wrap all these sounds together and you can almost smell the record deals in the distance.

The boys are currently working on new music, but right now you can pick up their debut EP off of Bandcamp for free, or you can pay what you want.

Bands to Watch: Tobias Jesso Jr.

Words by: Anna Julia

I would like to take this time to feature not a band, but an alternative solo artist who is stepping his way through the current musical scene. He comes from the cold lands of Canada, and with only his utterly beautiful voice and a weeping piano, this musician has reached the hearts of even the most harder people -including Taylor Swift.

I’m talking about Tobias Jesso Jr, a name probably known now by many of you, even if only because of the first single of his new album: 'How Could You Babe'. Starting his career as a bassist for a band called The Sessions, he wrote and composed his own songs on the piano. His demos spread in late 2013, and he quickly began recording his first LP, Goon, with collaborations such as Danielle Haim or Patrick Carney, a member of The Black Keys and producer of the album.

His music is tender and soft, with a jazz vibe. I’ve listened to his album, which was released a few weeks ago (if I’m not mistaken… at least it’s on Spotify), and what I can’t doubt is that he is really, really talented. His music, which could serve too as ambient tunes or as the soundtrack of a romantic movie, is brilliantly composed and well-thought, and his music lets us see it with delicacy.

Among his fans there are the Haim sisters, Adele and Taylor Swift. With his brand new album, which was released this March, Tobias Jesso Jr is sure to develop a great fanbase in the indie music scene. He’s on his way, and has no reason to stop.

Feature Review: Prologue EP by Trending Now

By: Liz Coffey
Hailing from Lexington, KY, Trending Now is truly a band to keep your eye on. Not only do they deliver great tunes, they are also four of the most genuine guys you’ll ever meet. The combination of awesome music, well-written lyrics, and integrity are the core reasons I believe they are one of the best up-and-coming bands of this year. They’re one of those great bands who are really in music for the right reasons, as they’ve described to me over the last couple of weeks, and they also gave me their own thoughts on their debut EP, Prologue.

“We recorded Prologue from May 26th-29th, 2014. Although we had been writing music since high school, up until that point we had never released anything.  We were at a point last year when we finally found a great singer, and Knox was graduating college and was going to be in Lexington full time again for the first time in 4 years, so by default if we wanted the band to have any future, we had to hit the studio and put something out. We booked the days, had zero rehearsal time and laid down the 4 songs we knew how to play best, and taught Ryan how to sing them on the spot. When we finished recording it I was never truly satisfied.  Looking back on it I realize it is because we hadn’t discovered our identity as a band yet.  What releasing Prologue has made me realize in retrospect is what art is truly about, it is a time capsule of human emotion that brings people together and makes them realize that they are not alone. I will forever be satisfied with Prologue because it is a musical freeze frame of where we were in our lives and as a band and, like Miller said, it laid the foundation of where we are now, it made us address all of the tough questions a band faces when trying to take the next steps, who are we? What do we stand for? Why are we even doing this? The answer is simple: we want our band to inspire people to make the world a better place… not in a fluffy fairytale way, in an honest down to earth way. In the words of the great Billie Joe Armstrong “our passion is our strength” and Trending Now’s passion is making good music that makes people want to be good, too.” – Colin Michael

“I think there's definitely something to be said for a band's first recorded work, and that something depends on how listeners react. We've shown prologue to lots of friends and family, people that mean something to us, people that shaped us, and a majority of them have enjoyed what they heard both aesthetically and lyrically. I think it's important to have some tangible evidence that the first music you show to the world can really have an impact on it, and that's what prologue gave us. We want to be the muses of our generation.” – Knox McConnell

"Prologue for me was the first time we could finally let people get a glimpse about what we can do with our music. It's a great foundation which we aim to build on" – Miller Owens

"The prologue really just solidified my confidence in us as a band and in myself. I was the new guy, and I was still unsure of myself up until that point. The prologue set the stage for a good career by showing us what we could do. But it was written before I had joined so I had minimal influence on those tracks. Our newer stuff has my own touch added so it makes a difference in my performance." – Ryan Greenwell

As they prepare for an eventful summer I took the time to reflect on Prologue, which was released in the fall of 2014. Colin gave me an idea of what this EP was all about, saying that it was really the “prologue” to them as a band. Their story is about to really start, and this release was just the beginning. Trending Now is all about changing social norms, they want to make being a good person a cool thing again, which they talk about in their previous interview with Shuffle Beat. Their songs are a genuine representation of their lives, and they aim to be relatable.

No Regrets-- This song is really catchy, with a summer feel to it that makes it danceable in addition to being uplifting. The lyrics for the chorus are the best part in my opinion.

Best Lyrics:  “Yesterday’s behind you, tomorrow’s nothing yet. Don’t make mistakes today that you might soon regret. Let’s leave the past behind us, let’s make tomorrow best. Let’s remember why we came here and forget all the rest.”

4813-- This one is a little heavier musically than No Regrets, but it’s still awesome to rock out to. It’s about a relationship that went south, and the song calls out the girl for playing people. Since hearing it for the first time, I find myself humming it more often than not, so prepare to have it stuck in your head.

Best Lyrics: “You think boys are all the same, just small pieces in your game. Confidence has paid the price, you’re still held fast by your vice.”

Conclusions-- With awesome riffs and a sound reminiscent of All Time Low, this one is probably the most solid song on the album, and definitely my favorite. This song has nailed the balance between well-written music AND lyrics, which is a tough thing to do for many artists.

Best Lyrics: “Let’s all say what we’re thinking, in spite of what we lack. Each moment of hesitation, is one you won’t get back.”

Wishful Thinking-- The unique melody that the lyrics are set to is what drew me to this song. The music is definitely a little heavier than the rest of the songs, but the contrast between that and lighter, more “poppy” lyrics is what makes the track.

Best Lyrics: “But if all that we have is the choices we make, then isn't it luck that's deciding the stakes? What I'm trying to say is that I've been falling out, because for me the horizon is stormy and dark.”
So what are they looking forward to?
“I am most looking forward to recording a great album, and taking the steps to reach as many people as we possibly can with our vision and music” – Colin
“Releasing a CD on a notable label; that represents an achievement for us and I just enjoy the art of music and spreading our imagination to others” – Miller
“I'm looking forward to touring around and playing shows other than Lexington, because I'm ready to start spreading our music to other places and gaining a larger following” - Knox
Also-just as a little tease-I've heard the demos for their next album, and trust me when I say the Prologue EP definitely WAS only the beginning!

Bands to Watch: PUP

Words by: Kat Quach

Pathetic Use of Potential or PUP, is a very loud, punk indie rock band that consists of four childhood friends. They’re located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and are made up of Zack Mykula on drums, Nestor Chumak on bass, and both Steve Sladkowski and Stefan Babcock on guitar. They used to be called Topanga (BMW reference) but have recently changed it. Their album has the right amount of anger and angst with some catch pop hooks like “Reservoir” and “Guilt Trip”, and will literally rock your socks off! Their self-titled album “PUP” was self-released and recorded back in 2013 online and that’s how they were noticed by Hollerado within a couple of days. PUP have opened for Hollerado, Zolas, Tokyo Police Club and Fucked Up and will be participating in this year’s Vans Warped Tour, so make sure you check out their set, especially if you’re going to the Toronto date! They will be performing back at their hometown and the show is set to be highly anticipated.

Bands To Watch: HINDS

Words by: Anna Julia

Hinds is the garage-rock band previously known as Deers. It is made up of four young women; Ade, Carlotta, Amber and Ana, whose ages range between the 18 and the 23 years old, comes from Madrid, Spain, and has sparked a revolution around all media and festivals. All went too fast for the four girls who, in 2014, a few days after having uploaded their first song to Bandcamp, already had gig offers and praise (from media like NME, or from musicians like Patrick Carney from the Black Keys) about them. Their success was such, that a Canadian band nearly denounced them for having a band name too similar to theirs, and in January 7th, 2015, Deers became Hinds. They have published only two singles, around five songs only, and a few official videos in their YouTube channel, but have already been the support band for The Libertines or The Vaccines, to name a pair.

Their music is usually classified as garage rock, lo-fi or garage pop, although they say in many interviews that they don’t want to be typecast, that “they want to play the music they enjoy listening to”. What’s not to argue about them is that, undoubtedly, their music, their atmosphere, their attitude, are fresh and raw and wild, and that’s what I (and the rest of their fans, I think) love about them. They don’t care if their music is correct, or beautifully composed, not even if their lyrics are deep or poetic; they just want to spark emotions, spark joy and that kick-ass mood we all love, in the people who listens to them. I think it’s a really great way of seeing music.

About their songs, I’d say all their music is advisable (come on, it’s only four songs, doesn’t take that long to hear them all), but if you asked me for my favourites, first comes Between Cans, and then Trippy Gum. But hey, give a listen to all of the songs, puh-leeeeeeze!

Their first studio album is expected to be released this October, and the list of festivals in which they’ll play is growing every day, so… yeah.

It would be a great, incredible opportunity for me to interview them some day, but for now I’ll stick to discover to whoever is reading this Hinds’ music.
