Review: After Party by Ghost Town

Words by: Savanah Ann

Hi, everybody! I've loved this album for a while, so I thought I'd review it and more people could check it out. The album I'm talking about is The After Party by Ghost Town. This album came out in 2014, and features a sound that's different from anything I've listened to before.  This is the perfect album to listen to if you feel like listening to something dark and spooky without (that much) screaming. Also, if you liked The Mechanical Heart EP by New Years Day, you will probably like this. After listening to this for a year, I can safely say I'm still not bored by it, which for me is saying something. Overall, if you're looking for a band with unique style and a spooky side, this is one album you need to check out. Ghost Town is currently on the Three Ring Circus Tour with Falling In Reverse if you want to see them live, and if you live in the UK, they will be playing at Download Festival. Also, they have an artist who does artwork for some of their songs, which you can check out on Youtube.

1. Acid- This song is a cool intro to the world of Ghost Town. With lyrics about girls melting and purple smoke, along with the main character questioning whether or not it's a dream, The song reminds me of a fun house, and I can't help but be entertained by this song. I can definitely see this being a fun music video if Ghost Town decided to make one for it.

2. I'm Weird- This song is about the internal struggle most of us go through when we think about liking people and how they might react to our personalities. Everyone's had their weird or creepy moments, and this song expresses the nervousness that comes with new relationships and how they coincide with our quirks.

3. Carnival- This song has a beat that reminds me of a carnival, and lyrics that talk about wanting to be with someone you know you should stay away from. One moment you like that person, the next you can't stand them. This is yet another relatable song.

4. That's Unusual (Jump)- This song makes listeners want to jump and it’s just another great song from the band. If you check out the artwork for this song you will see that it's a tea party theme, which definitely fits the song perfectly. Overall, another strong track that fits the theme of this album perfectly.

5. You're So Creepy- This song is one of my favorite Ghost Town songs, and you've probably heard it at least once since it's fairly popular. While I like this song a lot, I definitely prefer the original version from Ghost Town's album Party in the Graveyard, and recommend listening to that version although this version is still very good.

6. Under Wraps- This song is another song about loving your lover's imperfections, and reuniting with them. It talks about trying to keep love from surfacing, and not being able to stay away. This song is so beautiful, and I love the slow parts, especially the solo from the vocalist.

7. Black Moon- This song is even slower than Under Wraps, and to me is a very theatrical song. It’s about feeling so alone that you feel like a slave to the person you want. You can tell that the person really wants who they're talking about. Yet another beautiful song and I like the piano in it.

8. Hocus Pocus- This song is about a manipulative person who preys on others, and kind of a way of saying that they will be their own downfall, which you can tell through lyrics like "careful what you wish for". I like the scream vocals in this and it’s another one of my favorite Ghost Town songs.

9. Dracula- Another theatrical track based off Dracula and I think it was executed very nicely and wasn't just a cheesy song about a movie, although some of the lyrics can be pretty cheesy. I happen to like this song a lot and I recommend checking it out.

10. WFF- This is a sequel to Ghost Town's song Dr. Doctor, and is basically about a two faced friend. This song has a very intense vibe to me and it's a great song about being done with someone. Such a great second to last track and I love the lyrical content. Overall, another strong song on the record.

11. I'm A Disaster- This song is about being different, and accepting that you're a disaster. Throughout the song, the vocalist is saying that they accept themselves, but as the song progresses, the person starts to question who they are, and realizes in the end they need to change. This is a great song and has its own little story that I really like. I think out of all the songs on this album they couldn't have chosen a better conclusion to it. It's soft, it's powerful, and it's a beautiful song.
